Pierre Poilievre opposes Century Initiative plan to boost Canada’s population through immigration while still recognizing the importance of immigration.
In mid-May, Bloc Quebecois leader, Yves Francois Blanchet denounced the goal of the group, Century Initiative, which would increase Canada’s population to 100 million by 2100. The reason for opposing the goal is that it would diminish the French language and impact housing and health-care availability.
Though the Conservatives supported the motion to reject the Century Initiative objectives, Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre says he prefers a plan that will make Canada’s immigration system more dynamic. This includes addressing the immigration application backlog and speeding up credential recognition for foreign trained doctors and nurses. Conservative immigration critic, Tom Kmiec also says, the Conservatives would put greater emphasis in employer driven immigration streams and address critical labour needs.
While policy experts recommend for the government to re-examine its immigration targets, there are concerns that the housing crisis will impact immigration. Enrollment numbers for Ontario Colleges also suggest many international students are guest workers, registering for classes online, while spending most of the time working in gas stations or coffee shops.
Despite this, Poilievre remains committed to immigration, including creating a system that is more dynamic which responds to Canada’s changing labour market and economy.
