Canada’s reputation as a safe and multicultural country has continued to attract international students, 96% of whom would recommend Canada as a place to live.
According to statistics from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada, the international student body grew by 16% in 2018, up from the previous year’s growth of 20%. In December 2018 there was a total of 572,415 international students in Canada.
Studies also show that source countries are changing, with most international students now arriving from India. The number of students from China has stayed relatively constant, growing by only 2% in comparison to India’s 40% in 2017.
The increase in the number of post-secondary vs. elementary and high school students was in proportion to the overall jump of 17%, as 435,415 new students entered Canada’s universities in 2018.
