Immigration Minister Receives Mandate Letter Immigration Priorities

Canada’s Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, P.C., M.P., recently sent mandate letters to all cabinet ministers.

Mandate letters provide instructions for ministers on the priorities for their departments and outline challenges they must work to address in their role as minister.

New immigration minister, the Honourable Sean Fraser, P.C., M.P., received his letter last week, outlining the priorities for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan remains a priority, as is boosting Canada’s economy through immigration.

Other highlights of the letter include the following:

  • continued support of Afghan refugee resettlement,
  • increased supports for Francophone immigration,
  • and backing small- and mid-sized communities by expanding the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot and making the Atlantic Immigration Pilot permanent.

The letter also referenced the difficulties the immigration portfolio has faced during the pandemic and the vital role immigrants have played in Canada’s response.
