Syrian Refugees in Canada, Three Years Later

According to a recent Maclean’s article, 58,650 Syrian refugees have arrived in Canada since the 2016 election.

However, a recent StatsCan poll shows that this group is faring less well than others at finding employment in Canada, likely because the Canadian government adjusted its acceptance criteria in response to the crisis, meaning that some Syrian refugees had fewer language and education skills than would usually be required.

A longer-term study suggested that those from some countries (e.g. Iraq, Somalia, and Afghanistan) fared worse in the long-term than immigrants from other countries, even when language skills and education were accounted for.

Many of the refugees were chosen for humanitarian reasons and may have been injured, or they may not have had the chance to graduate from high school.

A hopeful sign is that the refugees who arrived earlier are already faring better than those who came later, suggesting that relative success is simply a matter of time.
