Prime Minister issues statement on National Flag of Canada Day

February 15th, 2023 marks the 58th year of waving the national maple leaf flag in Canada.

National flag of Canada Day celebrates the origin of Maple Leaf Flag, raised for the first time on Parliament hills on February,15th, 1965. The flag is a symbol of equality, multiculturalism and freedom that unites everyone in the country. Canadians across the world celebrate the day by raising the fag to pay tribute to the maple leaf and by wearing red and white colours which are the national colours of Canada.

Although Canada achieved its independence in 1868 from Great Britain, the country continued to include the elements of British flag but in its own design. In the middle of the 20th century, Canada decided to create its own unique flag that would represent the entire nation.

On the occasion of National flag of Canada Day, The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, issued a special statement:

“Today, I join Canadians across the country and around the world to celebrate the National Flag of Canada. On this day in 1965, one of our country’s most well-known symbols – the maple leaf – was raised on Parliament Hill for the first time.

“On this National Flag of Canada Day, we celebrate the promise the Maple Leaf Flag stands for: that as a people, Canadians strive for peace, unity that respects our diversity, and a better world where no one is left behind.”
