Canada meets its 2022 Francophone Immigration targets

Canada welcomed the highest number of francophone newcomers since 2006.

French-speaking newcomers contribute to the development of the francophone minority communities and to the diversity of the cultural and linguistic aspect of the country.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently announced that Canada has achieved its 2022 goal of 4.4 per cent of French speaking newcomers outside Quebec. This accomplishment means that the newcomers in Canada are making a significant contribution to promoting the French language and addressing the labour shortage in the country.

Last year, more than 16,300 newcomers in Canada settled in francophone minority communities, whereas during the first census year in 2006, the number of French speaking immigrants outside Quebec was just over 2,800. This represents a major jump of 3.02 % between 2006 and 2022.

Immigration minister Sean Fraser says “We will continue to welcome French-speaking immigrants to ensure the viability of these key communities that are helping to shape the future of our country.”
