Canada expands the sponsorship opportunities for more refugees

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that the number of refugees that can be sponsored is increasing in 2023.

Canada is a country known for welcoming tens of thousands of refugees every year with an open arm. The country is considered as a global leader in refugee resettlement and integration. Four decades ago, Canada launched the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) Program to provide protection, safety, and permanent home to refugees. The programs has given birth to over 130 organizations known as sponsorship agreement holders (SAHs) who sponsor a set number of refugees every year.

IRCC has recently announced that the number of refugees that SAHs can sponsor is increasing to 13,500 this year. This move by IRCC represents an increase of 12,150 spaces available to SAHs.

Sean Fraser, minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, says, “Our government is increasing the number of refugees that can be sponsored by sponsorship agreement holders to 13,500, a 10-fold increase from when the cap was first introduced in 2012. This announcement will support the vital work of these community organizations so they can continue helping refugees from around the world settle in Canada.”
