New septic tank design for a house expansion
By: Clarissa on Aug 15, 2026 11:56 AM EST
Can an existing septic tank be used when expanding a house, or is a new design required after increasing the living space? What parameters of the old system should be checked to ensure it meets the new requirements?

When expanding a house, a completely new septic system will definitely be required. In some cases, the existing system may be adequate, but first, you need to check the number of bedrooms and the wastewater volume it was designed for. It's also worth assessing the condition of the septic tank and drainfield, their location relative to the new addition, the availability of sufficient reserve space, and compliance with current requirements.

The increase in living space changes the hydraulic load on the entire network. According to design standards, engineering capacity calculations are initially performed based on the number of bedrooms, wastewater volume and soil characteristics. The assessment includes a technical inspection, including septic pumping to clean and test the tank, as well as soil permeability testing. If the existing system does not meet the new parameters of the facility, a new upgrade or installation plan is developed.
