Has anyone ever shipped a car across the country?

I want to buy this old car from a gentleman I met on a forum. It's a Saab station wagon. He lives in North Carolina (Carolina Beach) and I live in California (San Francisco). I'm debating whether to fly there and drive back or use a car carrier. I'm only hesitant about a car carrier because I've never used one. Has anyone ever shipped a car across the country?
