The Canadian Government has resettled 35,235 Afghans since August 2021.
After the Taliban gained control in August 2021, Canada promised to resettle at least 40,000 Afghans by the end of 2023 through its several special programs including the Special Immigration Measures Program for Afghans who assisted the Government of Canada, a humanitarian program, and a permanent residence pathway for extended family members of former interpreters.
As of July 28, 2023, the Government has welcomed 35,860 Afghans in Canada and is now on track to reach the 40,000 target by the end of 2023. Recently, 343 Afghan nationals arrived in Toronto on July 26, 2023.
The arrivals will continue their journey to 34 communities across the country, including Calgary, Ottawa, and Windsor. Canada was one of the first countries to launch a special humanitarian resettlement program for vulnerable Afghans. Afghans have been welcomed in more than 170 communities across Canada so far.
