Canada Raises Right of Citizenship Fee

The fee for adult applicants will increase from $100.00 to $119.75. This fee is only for applicants aged 18 and older; children under 18 are exempt.

Applicants must be permanent residents who have lived in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the last five years, filed income taxes, and passed a citizenship test (if aged 18 to 54). They must also demonstrate proficiency in English or French. The fee must be paid before receiving a citizenship certificate.

If you applied online after March 31, 2025, with the old fee, you must pay an additional $19.75. Mailed applications that were submitted before the fee increase will not be rejected but will still require the fee difference upon processing. If you didn’t pay the fee initially, you must pay the new full amount of $119.75.

To pay the difference, calculate the total owed, then make the payment via the government’s online portal in the “make an additional payment” section. Submit your payment receipt as directed by IRCC. In conclusion, understanding these changes is essential for prospective Canadian citizens to navigate the citizenship process effectively.
