Support continues for those unable to return to Gaza
As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues, the Government of Canada has extended temporary immigration measures for Palestinians currently in Canada who are unable to return home.
Originally introduced in December 2023, the measures allow eligible individuals to apply for fee-exempt study permits, open work permits, temporary resident permits, or extensions of their temporary status. They also apply to foreign national family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who left Gaza on or after October 7, 2023.
Canada has been a global leader in supporting displaced Gazans. As of July 8, 2025, over 1,750 people who exited Gaza have been approved to come to Canada, with more than 860 already arrived. Those in Canada can access health care, settlement services, and financial assistance.
The government recognizes that many extended family applicants remain unable to exit Gaza due to ongoing restrictions. While Canada continues to advocate for their safe passage, it does not control who can leave. Applications are still being processed, and individuals who reach Canada can continue to apply for fee-exempt permits under the extended measures.
