Work experience requirement for caregivers to be reduced for permanent residence application.

Canada is reducing the amount of work experience to 12 months for caregivers to qualify for permanent residence.

Caregivers have always played a crucial role in supporting families in Canada. They are integral to providing care for the lives of many growing children, elderly parents, and those who need extra dedicated care. To acknowledge their selfless efforts, Canada is easing the pathway to permanent residency.

Members of Parliament Salma Zahid and Rechie Valdez have recently announced that the amount of work experience required for a caregiver to qualify for permanent residence will be reduced from 24 months to 12 months. Moreover, some spaces that falls under the existing caregiver pathway have been preserved for caregivers who already have Canadian work experience from a previous work permit so that they can apply for permanent residence.

The change will come in effect on April 30 this year and will also be applicable for caregivers who have already applied. With this move, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) also aims at improving the processing time of  permanent residence applications for caregivers.
