Work Hour Cap Temporarily Lifted for International Students

Today, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister, the Honourable Sean Fraser, announced a temporary lifting of restrictions on the number of hours international students can work.

Students previously restricted to 20 hours per week can now exceed the cap under the study work visa program. Students are also allowed to work off campus.

The work hour cap reprieve is temporary in response to labour shortages and will extend from November 15, 2022, until December 31, 2023. The news affects the 500,000 international students already in Canada.

Today’s announcement reflects the inviting atmosphere of immigration recruiters looking to attract qualified candidates to come to Canada as international students, work while studying, and to stay as a permanent residence and highly skilled workers after graduation. The RICC rate of approval for study permit extensions is already high: 97% in 2021 and 96% in 2022 among 119,000 and 135,000 applications from January to August.

Increasing the number of hours a student can work off campus as an international student simplifies life for international students working to earn income towards living expenses and tuition while attending Canadian Universities and increases cash flow for students with dependent relatives. The move also encourages students to gain a greater number of Canadian work experience.
