The future of Canada’s immigration system

Canada’s immigration minister met recently to discuss the future of the country’s immigration system.

The Forum of Ministers Responsible for Immigration (FMRI) met recently for its midterm meeting at the Canadian Museum of Immigration in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to discuss the future of Canada’s immigration system. The FMRI includes federal, provincial, and territorial ministers. The meeting focused on how to achieve shared priorities. It also highlighted important discussions about settlement and integration efforts and Foreign Credential Recognition (FCR). The ministers in the meeting spoke positively about the support for immigration in Canada and how they have been able to build on objectives outlined last summer.

The meetings take place twice in a year. The last meeting took place in Saint John, New Brunswick, on July 28th, 2022. Ministers were pleased with the development that has been made so far towards expanding the efficiency of Canada’s immigration system to meet economic and regional requirements that were discussed in their last meeting in July.

Immigration Minister and federal co-chair of Forum of Ministers, Sean Fraser says, “We had productive discussions on shared priorities such as sharing the benefits of immigration through enhancing the Provincial Nominee Program, reducing barriers to Foreign Credential Recognition, addressing irregular migration, and continuing our proud humanitarian tradition by supporting newcomers from Afghanistan, Ukraine, and other vulnerable populations around the world.”
