Temporary Policy Changes Made to Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP)

The changes remain in effect until August 31, 2023.

Students whose studies were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and COVID-19 border closures may be able to complete 50% or 100% of their courses online or outside of Canada and still work under the PGWPP thanks to temporary policy changes to the Work Permit Program.

The Canadian Government is temporarily allowing the time students spend studying outside of Canada to count towards the minimum number of hours required in the post-graduation work permit program. Students typically would have to live in Canada during their study period in order to apply study hours from Canadian institutions towards the PGWPP. The changes make post-graduation work possible for students who could not live in Canada due to COVID-19 restrictions assuming that their studies are in PGWP-eligible programs and they meet other points of eligibility. The changes are for students who enrolled or planned to begin their PGWP-eligible studies between March 2020 and August 31, 2022, or if eligible programs were in progress in March 2020.

In addition, qualifying students in Canada who applied for their work permits before their study permits expire, can work without a work permit while their application is processed.
