New Legislation to Strengthen Immigration Consultant Regulation

Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen announced changes yesterday that will result in tougher legislation on immigration consultants.

Through the new College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants, the government will set and enforce standards of practice. In addition to being able to investigate and punish fraudulent immigration consultants, the College will design a mandatory course for prospective immigration consultants. As a regulatory body, it will also introduce a better complaints system and make fees charged by immigration consultants more transparent to the public.

These measures will not only help newcomers and Canadians, but will also help more ethical, professional immigration consultants become more competitive.
