Minister Hussen Responds to Auditor General’s Report

A recent report by the Auditor General of Canada highlighted a large backlog in refugee claims that has affected wait times on decisions.

Asylum claims in Canada rose sharply after Donald Trump’s 2016 election, and claimants now wait an average of two years for a decision.

Minister Ahmed Hussen released a statement on May 7 addressing these concerns and acknowledging that there is room for improvement in Canada’s existing system.

Hussen noted increased funding for the Immigration and Refugee Board in the 2018 and 2019 budgets, which would help expand the system. He also said that progress is being made to improve communication across the three agencies that deal with refugee claims through implementation of the Asylum System Management Board and Integrated Claims analysis centre.
