Equal Participation and Gender Equality Supported with $5.8 Million in Funding.

Halifax - December 9, 2022 – Lena Metlege Diab, Member of Parliament for Halifax West, announces $5.8 million additional funding to support projects designed to help Newcomer Women gain equal footing.

The announcement was made during Canada’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence and is part of the Racialized Newcomer Women Pilot, which runs until 2025. The funding joins the original $15 Million and will extend the pilot to four years. The pilot will ensure Female Immigrants are empowered to overcome racial and gender-based discrimination, find stable employment and enrol their children in childcare they can afford.

For organizations like New Circles Community in Toronto, the increase in funding allow staff to improve services for skills building and access to labour markets. Organizations in smaller cities and rural areas will also receive the much-needed cash infusion for work placement, job counselling, and workshops.

The move underlines Canada’s continuing role as a champion and funding country for the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and comes on the heels of a 2021 study showing that Newcomer women suffer unemployment at a rate of 15.2%, a much higher rate than the current 5.2% Canadian average.
