Canadians Lead Way in Positive Attitudes Toward Immigrants

A recent Pew Research survey of 18 of the world’s top destination countries for newcomers found that Canadians ranked highest on positive views of immigrants.

Canadians were the most likely of all 18 countries to see immigrants as a national strength rather than a burden, with 68% of respondents viewing newcomers as a benefit. Canadians were also far less likely to blame immigrants for crime, with 80% of respondents saying immigrants were no more to blame for crime than other groups.

Countries in the list included the United States, Australia, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, and Israel, among others, which together host half of the world’s immigrants, or 127 million people.

Of these countries, Canada ranks sixth in the number of immigrants, with 7,860,000 newcomers in the country as of 2017.
