Canada expands and extends work permit for Hong Kong residents

Canada is relaxing its immigration process for Hong Kong residents and extending a deadline for special work permits.

Hongkongers will now be able to apply for the open work permit with a fast-track route as Canada is extending the deadline to apply and expanding eligibility to residents.  Those who have graduated with in last 10 years from eligible post-secondary educational institutions in Canada and abroad will now be to follow their career paths and gain work experience for up to 3 years in Canada.

The deadline, which was set to expire this month is now extended until Feb. 7, 2025. Hong Kong residents who have left Canada are also eligible to apply under Canada’s existing resettlement programs. As per the Hong Kong open work permit public program, spouses or common-law partners and dependent children can also apply for a study or work permit.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser says, “Canada will continue to support the many meaningful exchanges between Canada and Hong Kong while standing up for the people of Hong Kong. “
