Atlantic Immigration Pilot: Spouses Can Now Apply for Work Permits

New changes to the Atlantic Immigration pilot will make it possible for spouses of newcomers accepted through the program to apply for a larger variety of work permits.

In the past, only highly skilled spouses of those accepted through the program could apply for work permits. As of June 1, however, it will allow intermediately skilled workers to apply for work permits as well.

The intermediate category includes occupations such as truck driver and food server, allowing spouses with a greater range of skills to apply for work permits.

The change came following demand for more spousal options and is designed to help keep families that move to Atlantic Canada through the pilot together.

In March many other changes were made to the program, which has been extended until 2021.
