200 Afghan Refugees Land in Vancouver

On January 19th, 2022, Minister Sean Fraser announced the arrival of over 200 Afghan Refugees in Vancouver, BC, bringing Canada’s number of accepted Afghan refugees to 7,000.

The latest arrivals had come from Islamabad, Pakistan and were mostly people who had worked with the Canadian government. Many are starting a new life in BC, and some are reconnecting across Canada with family members.

Canada is firm in its promise to resettle 40,000 Afghan refugees using resources like the many IRCC-funded Resettlement Assistance Program service provider organizations, also know as RAP SPOs. These include programs run by non-profit organizations such as S.U.C.C.E.S.S, who provided the Community Airport Newcomers Network to the latest refugees, giving them winter clothes, transportation, and orientation as soon as they arrived on the 19th.  The BC government has previously announced the creation of the Refugee Readiness Fund on November 21, 2021, with a budget of $2 million and an aim to strengthen local refugee services and refugee families.
